One way I would like to use a blog in my 3rd grade Bilingual classroom will be to display my student's work. I feel this is great way of sharing their projects with their family, friends and other classes. By doing this my students will take pride in the work they do to create their projects and will be motivated to continue creating quality work.
In addition, posting and sharing will make the assignment more relevant to them and give them the opportunity to receive comments and constructive criticism about their projects.

Hi Yolanda,
ReplyDeleteI think that is a great idea. I plan on using my blog for the very same reason. However, You (and me) might have a problem reaching those households that do not have internet access. I can only imagine this causing those students to become upset because they feel left out.
Also, you mentioned that you would use it for a bilingual program. Do you plan on having a bilingual blog so that non-English speaking families can also participate? I am wondering if there is a feature that you can add that will switch your blog from English to any language?
I think posting student work is a great way to motivate students to do their best work. You had mentioned about them blogging and receiving compliments as well as criticisms about their work. Is there a way in which parents could only access their own child's work instead of being able to see all students' work? The reason why I am asking this question is because some parents can be very particular and protective about their child's academics. My colleague wanted to construct a website in which parents could access their child's homework status, so that they were always aware of incomplete assignments. There were several parents that voted against having this website designed because they didn't want their child's name to be exposed to the rest of the class and parents. Although your situation may not be as severe, I am curious as to how sensitive your parents are. Maybe the students can just post positive comments on the blog and you could verbally discuss criticisms in the classroom.
ReplyDeleteYolanda,
ReplyDeleteI also teach thrid grade, and completely agree with you about how motivating an audience can be for students to perform to their fullest potential.
Do you have particular subjects in mind that your students would blog about?

ReplyDeleteHello J. Salomon,
ReplyDeleteThank you for your response. You are absolute right; we will have the digital-divide problem, as we will only be able to reach those students with internet access. Because I work for a Title I school, where most of our students are free and reduced lunch, I know the majority of my students will not have internet access at home. I'm hoping they can visit a public library or a place where they can access the blog.
I still believe is important to pursue the blog idea to show our students that their work is important and that they deserve the same opportunities as anyone else.
In reference to doing the blog in Spanish, I love the idea. Even though my students can speak English, some parents only speak Spanish. Thank you for the suggestion.
Hello Megan Charles,
ReplyDeleteThank you for your response. My blog’s main purpose will be to display digital work my students created in Power Point, Photo Story3, Publisher, KidPix, etc. Just a showcase of the technology projects my students created to show parents how technology is being integrated in my classroom.
For security reasons I cannot include any names of students and no grades will be posted. Our school district’s technology department has a secure site where parents can access, with a password, to check on their child’s grades, attendance, etc.
Only visitors at first will be allowed to comment on the blog and I would manage the comments, deleting anything that is not appropriate. I’m hoping all comments will be constructive but you never know. I need to check my district policy on blogging to see if my students can participate in the blog.
Hello Donnel,
ReplyDeleteThank you for your response. I’m not sure yet if I’m going to have my students blog. The idea right now is to use it to display their digital projects so their families, friends, and other classes can see them. I know my students will be very excited when they see their work posted.
